Latexo, Texas, is a Houston County community of about 350 residents. Latexo is situated in the piney woods area of east Texas, directly to the north of Crockett, the county seat.

History

Latexo is in an area of the state that was still contested by settlers and Native Americans well into the 1830s. In fact, in 1839, some early residents had to seek refuge in the courthouse in Crockett when members of the Cherokee nation attacked. Latexo is the acronym for the Louisiana Texas Orchard Company. In the very early part of the 20th century, the company purchased 3,000 acres of land here. A town was subsequently platted in the center of the development.

Parks and Recreation

Local residents can enjoy the recreational opportunities available in the Davy Crockett National Forest. The 45-acre Ratcliffe Lake is located in the national forest, and it offers a high-quality swimming beach. The Ratcliffe Lake Recreation Area also offers boating, fishing, picnicking and hiking.

History buffs can visit Mission Tejas State Park to see the meticulously restored Rice family log cabin. The homestead was esablished in 1828, and the cabin was fully restored in 1974. A fishing pond in the state park includes a boat ramp, and 24 fishing poles are made available for public use. When the dogwoods bloom in March and April, the hiking trails become very popular.

Attractions and Activities

A special example of Eastlake Victorian architecture is found in nearby Crockett. The Downes-Aldrich house was built in the early 1890s, and it is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful homes in the entire county. Some also feel that the house may be haunted, as a doll’s image has mysteriously appeared in an attic window in the past.

Events

For over three decades, “Christmas in Crockett” has been a late November event that gets families and others in the mood for the holiday season. The event is held right on the historic town square. Residents of Latexo can head down the road to Crockett for the annual World Championship Fiddlers Festival. Now in its 77th year, the festival brings talented musicians together of all ages to vie for cash prizes. This June event also includes a classic auto and antique tractor display. For eight years now, a special steak cook-off competiton has been added to the festivities.
