Kennard History

The first Kennard, TX properties were formed in 1899 as a result of the Four C Mill which was owned by Central Coal and Coke Company of Kansas City Missouri. Kennard was actually founded by the mill owners in 1901 near the Chocino Bayou and in 1902, the town became official. The population in the area has always been rather scant; at its peak in 1936 the total population was just about 600.

Unfortunately, the town’s fortunes were often tied to the saw mill and deforestation soon led to the saw mill shutting down. The lands the sawmill was built on was later sold to the government and is today known as Davy Crockett National Forest. Kennard has their own school district which was formed in 1979 and is included along with 47 other schools in Houston County under the umbrella “Kennard Independent School District”.

Covering more than 160,000 acres, the Davy Crockett National Forest is located outside of US Highway 69.
