Grapeland, Texas, is a community of about 1,600 people in Houston County. The county, named after Sam Houston, was the very first one created in the Republic of Texas in 1837. The county is not to be confused with the city of Houston which lies 150 miles to the south. In 2007, citizens voted to legalize the sale of alcohol in Houston County.

History

The area of the Texas piney woods was first settled in the early 1800s. Early pioneers traveling on the Old San Antonio Road would often stop for food and supplies. Lumber mills flourished in the area throughout most of the 19th century.

Parks and Recreation

Davy Crockett National Forest covers more than 160,000 acres just to the east of Crockett and to the west of Lufkin. The national forest includes the 45-acre Ratcliff Lake, a popular destination for swimming, boating and fishing. The Ratcliffe Lake Recreation Area Hiking trails meander through the sometimes rolling terrain, towering pines and hardwood trees common in this area.

Events

The Grapeland Peanut Festival is an annual October event that has been held for 68 years. People of all ages come out to carnival, the queen coronation.

Salmon Lake Park hosts a number of festivals each year. There’s the Bluegrass Fun Weekend in late April followed by May’s Gospel Bluegrass Festival, now in its 17th year. Every August Salmon Lake Park hosts the Bluegrass Festival, now celebrating its 38th year.
