Crockett TX Real Estate, Crockett TX Area and Community Information

Crockett, Texas, is the county seat of Houston County, which lies about 150 miles north of the city of Houston. The community of about 8,000 individuals is located in the piney woods area of east Texas.

The area is steeped in history. The community is named after the legendary Davy Crockett, and the county is named after the first president of the Republic of Texas, Sam Houston. Crockett reportedly camped near here on his fateful journey to the Alamo. The land for the community was donated by a Tennessee family that had known him. The town was incorporated in 1837, and the post office opened in 1838.

This was still contested frontier, and in 1839 residents sought refuge in the log courthouse when the community was raided by Cherokee Indians. Confederate soldiers were trained here during the Civil War. The arrival of the railroad in 1872 was a boon for the timber industry. The mining of lignite coal spurred the local economy in the early 20th century.

Parks and Recreation

Mission Tejas State Park offers a variety of activities. The pond is a scenic element to be enjoyed by hikers walking along its shores. In March or early April, the dogwoods are bloom, and they are spectacular. A boat ramp is also provided, and there are even two-dozen fishing poles made available for public use. In the 1970s, the original Rice family log home was fully restored. This 1828 structure gives visitors a glimpse into the lifestyle of the earliest settlers here.

The 160,000-acre Davy Crockett National Forest is home to the Ratcliffe Lake Recreation Area. The 45-acre lake is well-known for its excellent swimming beach.

Attractions and Activities

Crockett is home to an historic nine-hole golf course established in 1928. Spring Creek Country Club is a 2,885-yard, nine-hole layout that plays to a par of 35. Fully grown, mature trees will entangle the wayward shot, and the rolling terrain will challenge one with the occasional downhill or sidehill lie.

For over three-quarters of a century, the World Championship Fiddlers Festival has been held in Crockett. Fiddlers of all ages compete for the title of world champion fiddler. The event, held at the Crockett Civic Center in mid-June, also includes an antique tractor and classic car display and a steak “cook-off.”

Christmas in Crockett is an arts and crafts festival that has been held in late November for 33 years. This event, located “on the square” in the heart of Crockett, is popular with local families and visitors alike.
